Liddell House

464 Montgomery Ferry Road

The second-oldest house in Atlanta is nestled in the heart of Piedmont Heights. It was built in the 1860s by Captain James McAlpin Liddell who served with distinction in Company l of the Sixteenth Georgia Regiment during the Civil War. Captain Liddell lived in the house until his death at age 82 in 1915. He was a member of the Rock Spring Presbyterian Church where he served as secretary for 52 years. He is buried in the Rock Spring Cemetery beside the church.

The house is a classic Antebellum farmhouse with a porte-cochère, clapboard siding, and slate roof. It was originally sited on 150 acres, which Captain Liddell actively farmed until 1900. Located barely 100 yards from the Georgia Air Line Railroad (today’s BeltLine) and its depot in the little township of Easton (where Ansley Mall is now located), it is thought that the Liddell house might at one time have served meals for hungry travelers passing through.

The house has had only eleven owners over the years. Although its interior was extensively remodeled by present owners, it retains much of its original ornamentation such as fireplace mantels, door knobs, hand-blown glass window panes, and heart-pine flooring hand-nailed with horseshoe nails.
